What to Write in a Baby Shower Card: 50+ Warm and Funny Messages

What to Write in a Baby Shower Card: 50+ Warm and Funny Messages

The best baby shower card message is short, warm and specific: congratulate the parents, use the baby's name if you know it, and add one personal wish. Two to three sentences is plenty, and you'll find 50+ ready-to-use messages below.

The gift gets opened, admired and passed around the room. The card gets tucked into a box, and a few years later it's the thing she finds, reads out loud and cries over a little. Plenty of new mums keep every one. Which is a lot of pressure when you're sitting there with a pen, the shower is tomorrow, and all you can think of is "congrats!"

Whether you want something traditional, funny, or written for one specific baby, this guide has 50+ baby shower card messages sorted by tone and situation. Use one as it is, or borrow the shape of it and make it sound like you.

One tip before you start: use the baby's name if the parents have shared it, or the parents' names if they haven't. A card that says "Nadia and Ben" feels written for them, not for "the new parents."

How to pick the right message

Start with who you are to the parents. A colleague gets something warm and short. A close friend gets something with a bit of you in it. Then look at the card: a small one holds a line or two, and anything longer belongs on a note tucked into the envelope. Last, read the room. A funny message works at a loud, chatty shower and can fall flat at a quiet one.

Traditional baby shower messages

Warm and simple. These suit a colleague, a neighbour or anyone you don't know well.

1. Congratulations on your new arrival. Wishing you all the joy in the world as your family grows.

2. Wishing you a safe delivery and a healthy baby. Your little one is so lucky to have you both.

3. What wonderful news. We're thrilled for you.

4. Thinking of you both at this special time. Congratulations on your baby.

5. A new baby is life's sweetest beginning. All the best as you welcome yours.

6. Congratulations on the newest member of your family. We can't wait to hear all about them.

7. Wishing you patience, good friends nearby and a few decent nights of sleep.

8. May this little one bring you more joy than you ever imagined.

9. I'm too far away to hug you, so this card will have to do. Sending all my love across the miles.

10. Sending our warmest wishes for the weeks ahead and the years after.

Funny baby shower card messages

Gentle jokes about sleepless nights and laundry piles, never about the parents.

11. Enjoy sleeping in while you can. Actually, you can't. Congratulations anyway.

12.Wishing you many happy years of cold coffee and missing socks.

13. Fair warning: babies don't come with a manual, but everyone you know will offer you theirs.

14. Here's to tiny socks, big smiles and so many nappies.

15. Your life is about to get louder and messier. It's also about to get a lot better.

16. May your baby sleep through the night. Soon. Very soon. Please.

17. Welcome to the "haven't finished a hot drink in weeks" club. Membership is lifelong.

18. Your camera roll is about to fill up with 4,000 photos of one very small person. We're here for every one of them.

19. You've planned the nursery, the pram and the playlist. The baby has other plans. Good luck, and congratulations.

Messages for a first-time mum

For the mum doing it all for the first time, and probably reading every book on the shelf.

34. You're going to be an amazing mum. We can't wait to watch it happen.

What not to write in a baby shower card

A few things are better left out, however well meant.

  • Parenting advice nobody asked for, such as sleep training or feeding choices.

  • Birth horror stories, or anything that makes the delivery sound scary.

  • Comments on the baby's looks, weight or gender ("Hope it's a boy!").

  • The baby's name or due date, unless the parents have already shared it.

  • Assumptions about the family. Not every baby arrives with a mum and a dad.

When in doubt, keep it to congratulations and a warm wish. It's hard to get that wrong.

Frequently asked questions

  • How long should a baby shower card message be?
Two to three sentences is the sweet spot. It's long enough to say something meaningful and short enough to fit the card. If you have more to say, tuck a handwritten note inside the envelope.

  • What do you write in a baby shower card if you don't know the parents well?
Keep it warm and simple. Something like "Congratulations on your new arrival, wishing you all the joy in the world" works well. Sincerity matters more than length.

  • Should you mention the baby's name or gender in a baby shower card?
Only if the parents have already shared it. Some families keep names or gender private until the birth, so if you're not sure, write "your little one" or "baby" instead.

  • Is it OK to write a funny message in a baby shower card?
Yes, if it suits the parents. Keep the jokes gentle and about the everyday chaos of babies, not about the parents themselves. If you're unsure, warm and simple is always the safer choice.

Turn your card into a keepsake

The words matter, and so does what they're written on. A card with a photo on it, whether it's the whole family or a "can't wait to meet you" shot, is the kind people tend to hold on to. It's the one that ends up in the memory box years later, next to the hospital bracelet.

Want to give something with it? Pair the card with a personalised photo blanket. It gets used from day one, and the card tucked inside is the part they'll keep. Browse personalised photo blankets.

Whatever you write, sign it with your name. Years from now, someone will want to know who wrote it.
