Graduation Thank You Card Messages: What to Write and How to Make It Memorable

A good graduation thank you card message names the gift or help you received, says what it meant to you, and looks ahead. Three or four sentences is plenty, and you'll find 40+ examples below for parents, family, friends, teachers and money gifts.

The gifts arrived, the gown went back, and the thank-you cards are still sitting on your desk. Three weeks later, you've written "Dear Auntie" four times, and that's as far as you've got. It's the last job on the graduation list, and the easiest one to put off.

A simple formula for any thank-you note

Name what they gave you or did, say what it meant, then say what's next. "Thank you for the laptop bag. It's coming to my first job with me, and I'll think of you every time I pick it up." That's already three sentences, and it already sounds like you.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "thanks for the gift" without naming the gift. Name it, and say what you'll do with it.

  • Sending the same message to everyone. Change at least one line for each person.

  • Mentioning the exact amount of a cash gift. Thank them for their generosity and say how you'll use it.

  • Waiting too long. A late card still beats none, but try to send yours within a few weeks of the ceremony.

  • Forgetting the help that wasn't a gift: the lift to the exam, the reference letter, the call before finals. Thank people for that too.

Make your thank-you card unforgettable

A plain card gets read and filed away. A card with your graduation photo on the front is the one that stays on the shelf or the fridge. Put the shot of you in the cap and gown on the cover, write your message inside, and it becomes a keepsake as well as a thank you. You can make a graduation photo card from your own photos.
